Honoring Deceased Loved Ones on Your Wedding Day

When you’ve lost a loved one, it can make planning your wedding bittersweet. It’s natural to want to include them in a special way, but I know I found it overwhelming to think about when it was my own turn to get married. If you’re in the same boat, here are a few ideas to consider:

  • Stitch a heart-shape from a piece of their clothing into your dress or onto the back of your tie

  • Attach their photograph to your bouquet

  • Wear a piece of their jewelry

  • Include their initials or photograph in custom cufflinks

  • Place their photograph in a reserved seat in front with your family during the ceremony

  • Include their photograph in your family photos that day

  • Feature a table at the reception with photos of those you wish could be there to celebrate with you

  • Light a candle in their honor

  • Mention them during a toast

We all grieve in our own way and if you’d prefer to incorporate more specific memories, you could:

  • Use their favorite poem or bible verse during your ceremony

  • Play their favorite song during the dance

  • Serve their favorite cookies with dessert

For example, I wrapped my grandmother’s rosary around the stem of my bouquet so she could be with me as I walked down the aisle. Wherever she went, she brought her rosary with her; it brought me peace knowing I held that memory in my hands on such an important day.

No matter what you decide, you knew them best. Deep down you’ll know the best way to honor them too.
